JCPS, Republic Bank among winners in Kilowatt Crackdown competition
More than 160 buildings were entered in the city’s third annual Kilowatt Crackdown competition, which challenges building owners and operators to track their energy in an effort to become more energy efficient. The organizations used the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star resources, specifically the Portfolio Manger online benchmarking tool, to monitor consumption and progress.Winners in the seven categories were: Harbor Group Management Co., Jefferson County Public Schools , Office Environment Co. , Republic Bank & Trust Co. , Eagle Paper Inc. and Louisville-Jefferson County Metro Government .JCPS was recognized in two categories: most efficient school building, for Breckinridge Metro High School, and most improved school, for Fern Creek Elementary School. The 161 buildings entered in the contest used a total of more than 28 million kilowatt hours of electricity less in 2011 than in 2010, the equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions from nearly 3,500 passenger vehicles, according to a news release.“It is important that our commercial properties help reduce our carbon footprint, and increased participation in the Kilowatt Crackdown competition helps achieve this goal,” Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said in the release. “Going green is important not only for a company’s bottom line but also for our environment and our quality of life, which means property managers and owners win, as does the entire community.”The Louisville Energy Alliance, a partnership among the city and several major commercial building associations, oversee the Kilowatt Crackdown, according to the release.
